NC REAL Sponsors Workshop for Burke County
February 23 – March 1, 2008 was National Entrepreneurship Week. Schools, colleges and organizations around the country held events to celebrate entrepreneurship and to support the goals and ideals of entrepreneurship in America. On February 29, seventy Burke County public high school students had an opportunity to participate in an Entrepreneurship Day at the Old Rock School in Valdese. Students from the school system’s three high schools were involved in the workshop. After greetings from school superintendent, David Burleson and Western Piedmont Community College’s Small Business and Entrepreneurship Director, Eddie McGimsey, NC REAL representatives Arlene Childers and Malinda Todd opened the day’s activities with an overview of NC REAL and Entrepreneurship education. The students engaged in Entrepreneurship BINGO, became aware of entrepreneurship traits and characteristics and formed teams to complete their own entrepreneurship activity. Students had to develop and create business ideas from inception to completion including mission statement, logo, marketing materials, and start-up and operational costs. Each group then presented to the audience with awards given to best presentation and best idea to work in Burke County. Business ideas included a 24 hour Day Care Center for working mothers, graphic and printing, sports and training complexes, motor cross, pastry and candy stores, restaurant, and beverage bar. At the close of the event students had an opportunity to reflect on the day’s activities.
