The BRIDGES for Youth Grant hosted a Regional Youth Business Plan Competition for High school students in Alleghany, Ashe, and Wilkes Counties to gain knowledge of entrepreneurship. The program gave students, working as individuals or teams, a “real life” experience within an educational setting. The program helped youth visualize what it is like to be an entrepreneur by generating an idea, and building it into a business of their own. This competition awarded scholarship prizes to the top three winners.

The competition consisted of three rounds. Each participant completed a round in order to move into the next round, and each stage expanded the participants understanding of entrepreneurship. The final judging took place May 13, 2009 in Ashe County. This competition was judged by a panel of small business counselors or advisors, and local community support team leaders. Awards were given at a Business Plan Competition Celebration on May 28, 2009, at The Walker Center at Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, NC.
